What’s the characteristics and dissolution method of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose?
Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose is a non-ionic cellulose ether polymer. According to the degree of substitution and modification of substituent groups, it has different solubility, surface activity, thermal gelation and compatibility with other substances, thus expanding its application field. HPMC is mainly used as a thickener, stabilizer, emulsifier, excipient, water retaining agent, film-forming agent, etc. in products such as petrochemicals, coatings, building materials, paint removers, agricultural chemicals, inks, textile printing and dyeing, ceramics, paper making, etc.
Characteristics of Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC):
1. Description: This product is a white or almost white powder, odorless, non-toxic, and can form a transparent colloid in aqueous solution.
2. Water solubility and thickening ability: This cold water instant type of product is soluble in cold water, and after about 10 minutes, its viscosity will fully increase, forming a transparent viscous liquid. Its thickening ability depends on its viscosity, which can be produced from 2000mpa.s to 200000 mpa.s
3. Low ash content: Due to the non-ionic nature of this product, it can be washed with hot water during the preparation process and effectively refined, resulting in a low ash content of 2% -5%.
4. PH stability: The viscosity of the aqueous solution of this product is at pH 3.0&flash; Within the range of 10.0, it is relatively stable. When it is less than 3 or greater than 10, the viscosity will significantly decrease, and this product has no viscosity in pure water.
5. Water retention: This product has high viscosity and can lock in water, causing slow evaporation of water. Therefore, it is used as a water retention agent in cement/putty.
6. Lubrication: It has good lubrication and can improve workability in putty powder and mortar. In honeycomb ceramics, it has good lubrication performance and is conducive to extrusion molding.
7. Anti mold: It has a good anti mold effect and is not easy to spoil. In the application of cosmetics, it can prevent product layering/mold.
12.Film forming property: After the putty powder is applied to the wall, it assists in forming a dense film on its surface, making the product surface smooth and delicate in honeycomb ceramics.
Dissolution method
Take the required amount of hot water and heat it into a container to above 85 ℃. Gradually add the product while stirring slowly. The cellulose initially floats on the water surface but is gradually dispersed to form a uniform slurry. Cool the solution while stirring. Alternatively, heat 1/3 or 2/3 of hot water to above 85 ℃, add cellulose to obtain a hot water slurry, then add the remaining amount of cold water, keep stirring, and cool to obtain the mixture.
